Most UK farmers choose to use granular fertilizers purchased in big bags. This gives them the flexibility to purchase product out of the usage season and utilise their on farm storage.

Bag disposal can be a problem which is why Yara have moved from 500kg to 600kg bags giving the following advantages:

• 17 less bags to handle
• 7% less plastic, less to dispose of
• payloads can be maximised
• less lorries on the road
• no double stacking, which will lead to safer handling
• spreader manufacturers can supply extensions if required

Most spreading machines chosen apply the fertilizer through a spinning disc mechanism whilst a minority prefer pneumatic.  Some grassland farmers applying to bout widths around 12 metres choose oscillating spout machines.
